And God made two great lights – the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night – and the stars. And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day.
Genesis 1:16-19
This morning is my first morning at Davis Mountains State Park, and the first morning I haven’t felt rushed my entire trip. I was able to get some sleep, wake up late, and especially enjoy my quiet time in the crisp, cool air.
The stars were amazing last night. It’s a new moon, so there’s no lesser light to detract from the beauty of the stars. I will try my hand at astrophotography at the Marfa Lights location if weather permits.
But, even with all this beauty around me, there are even more beautiful realms with God. I can’t imagine it! A more outstanding beauty than this earthly creation.
Jesus has described it as “paradise.” I can’t wait to see it. I know I struggle with earthly wants and desires. It’s in my nature. It’s a part of everyone’s nature to desire a part of the creation, whether it’s a family, a home, better finances, fame, power, or possessions. But God knows that. That’s why he gave us Jesus! That’s why he’s given us his grace.
As I wind up my camping experience on this trip, I try to imagine how Jesus traveled from town to town while on this earth. He did not have the conveniences that I have, even tent camping as I am. This trip has taught me a lot. I’m finding that I can serve in small ways, and I don’t need as much as I think I do. It will still be a struggle because who doesn’t want things? But, I pray God’s grace continually covers me as I look at the beauty of the stars.
