Where there is no prophetic vision the people cast off restraint, but blessed is he who keeps the law.
Proverbs 29:18 (ESV)
I have mentioned I am reading Billy Graham’s book, “Hear My Heart.” In his sub-chapter, “The National Need for Spiritual Moorings,” he references the above verse from Proverbs. Billy Graham uses the King James Version in his book; it reads: “Where there is no vision, the people perish … (Proverbs 19:18a).” I am scared for our country. If it were not for my faith and love for the Lord, I would be freaking out. Perish is a heavy word to use about a people.
We have lost our national vision! We have lost our love for one another and replaced it with an idealism of all sorts dividing our brothers and sisters and making them enemies. Here is a paragraph from Mr. Graham’s book:
There seems to be no permanent solution to our problems. We try this scheme and that, but we find each one is only a stopgap measure. Could it be that we have failed to properly diagnose the ills of the world? Could General MacArthur have been right when in the days of World War II he said, "The problem, basically, is theological. … There must be a revival of the spirit if we are to save the flesh.
Many of you know that Billy Graham is my number one hero. He was not without error but was grounded in the Lord and used the Lord’s Word as his message’s foundation. We need him now. We need a revival in our country, looking to the Lord for our direction and vision. We need to pray for our leaders to be godly leaders, and we need to pray for each other to come together once again and glorify God in worship and praise. Love God and love others – that’s what it’s all about.
