Around the Beach

I was the victim of a layoff two and a half years ago. Unlike many of my colleagues, I looked forward to my freedom. Knowing when my manager would call me with the news, I queued up The Who’s “I’m Free” from their Tommy album. I played the song through the phone when she said, “You’ve been laid off.”

I was excited to start my new life, but my Mom needed some care. I decided to move to Foley, Alabama, to attend to her. Just north of Gulf Shores, I had no complaints about the location. A few years ago, one of the travel magazines listed Gulf Shores and Orange Beach as third in the United States for “Best Beach,” behind a beach in Hawaii and Destin, Florida, which, in my view, is the same beach as Gulf Shores.
