Savannah, St. Simons Island, & Madison

I went backpacking in the Great Smokey Mountains National Park in October 2022. It was a thrill, especially seeing a bear cub run across my campsite. The leaves were changing color, and it was getting cold enough for me. I like cold. But the backpacking story and photos are for another post.

I took a wide detour, driving home over to the Atlantic coast. Savannah, Georgia, was my destination. Charleston and Savannah are my two favorite cities; I can see myself living there one day. My first experience in Savannah was while dating my girlfriend in college. She lived near Savannah, and we’d explore whenever she and I had the opportunity. Pirate’s House Restaurant was a favorite eating establishment.

The Pirates’ House Restaurant

The Pirates’ House in Savannah, Georgia, is a legendary dining establishment steeped in history. Dating back to the early 1700s, this iconic restaurant is one of the oldest buildings in Georgia. Originally an inn for seafarers and, according to lore, a haunt for pirates, it has evolved into a beloved dining destination while retaining its fascinating maritime past.

Legend has it that the Pirates’ House inspired Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Treasure Island” after the author heard tales of the place while visiting Savannah. The building’s historic charm and alleged connections to swashbucklers create an immersive visitor atmosphere. Inside, guests can explore the maze-like layout, discovering nooks and crannies reminiscent of its maritime past. The restaurant offers classic Southern cuisine, adding a flavorful modern twist to traditional dishes. With its unique ambiance, rich history, and delicious food, the Pirates’ House remains a must-visit destination in Savannah, captivating guests with its intriguing past and delightful dining experience.

Savannah’s Rich Historical Tapestry

Savannah, Georgia, a charming southern city, holds a rich tapestry of history and culture. Established in 1733 by General James Oglethorpe, it was the first planned city in the thirteen colonies. Its layout, designed around a series of squares, remains a defining feature, with 22 of the original 24 squares still gracing the city today. The cityscape boasts stunning oak-lined streets draped with Spanish moss, creating a picturesque ambiance that draws millions of visitors annually.

This historic city played a pivotal role in various periods of American history. During the Revolutionary War, Savannah was a key port city and, in 1864, became a focal point during the Civil War. Its strategic significance led to the Battle of Savannah, where Union forces attempted to capture the city. Today, Savannah preserves much of its history through landmarks like the Mercer-Williams House, where events from the book and movie “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” took place, and the hauntingly beautiful Bonaventure Cemetery, renowned for its ornate tombstones and lush greenery. The city’s vibrant arts scene, celebrated cuisine, and captivating historical sites make Savannah a timeless gem in the American South.

My Photos of Savannah & St. Simon Island, Georgia & Madison, Florida

Here are some photos from the trip. I stopped in St. Simons, Georgia, for breakfast and in Madison, Florida, for lunch. There’s a story about Madison, but I’ll reserve it for another time. Enjoy the images.
